How do you calculate the weight of a steel sheet?

The weight of a sheet is its volume multiplied by the material density: weight (kg) = length (mm) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. Typical densities are 7.85 g/cm³ for steel, about 7.9 g/cm³ for stainless steel, 2.70 g/cm³ for aluminium and 8.96 g/cm³ for copper. Example: a 1,000 × 2,000 mm steel sheet, 2 mm thick, weighs 1,000 × 2,000 × 2 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 31.4 kg.

A quick rule for steel: each millimetre of thickness weighs about 7.85 kg per square metre, so 3 mm steel plate weighs about 23.55 kg/m². Aluminium sheet of the same size weighs roughly one third of steel.

The result is a theoretical value based on nominal dimensions. Thickness tolerances, coatings and alloy differences change the actual weight slightly. For quotes, add cutting scrap, processing time and the material price separately.

How to use the results

The results are technical estimates. For a binding quote, material price, scrap, labour and your own shop rules also have to be taken into account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for sheet metal weight?

Weight (kg) = length × width × thickness (all in mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. Multiply by the quantity for the total weight.

How much does a 1,000 × 2,000 × 2 mm steel sheet weigh?

With a density of 7.85 g/cm³: 1,000 × 2,000 × 2 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 31.4 kg. The same sheet in aluminium (2.70 g/cm³) weighs about 10.8 kg.

How much does steel plate weigh per square metre?

About 7.85 kg per square metre for each millimetre of thickness: 1 mm ≈ 7.85 kg/m², 2 mm ≈ 15.7 kg/m², 5 mm ≈ 39.25 kg/m², 10 mm ≈ 78.5 kg/m².

Which density should I use for stainless steel?

The calculator uses 7.9 g/cm³ for stainless steel. Austenitic grades such as 1.4301 (304) are typically 7.9–7.93 g/cm³, so the difference is below one percent.

Is the calculated weight exact?

It is a theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Mill tolerances on thickness, coatings and alloy differences make the real weight slightly different, so weigh critical shipments.
